Nic Salts vs Shortfills: The Two Types of UK E-Liquid

UK e-liquid comes in two main formats. Nic salt e-liquids are sold in 10ml bottles at up to 20mg strength — smooth at high strengths and fast-absorbing, they're the natural pairing for pod kits and anyone switching from smoking. Shortfills are larger bottles of zero-nicotine liquid designed to have a nicotine shot added, favoured by sub-ohm vapers who want lower strengths in bigger volumes.

If you're using any of the pod kits we stock, nic salts are almost certainly what you want. Our guide on nic salt vs freebase nicotine covers the differences in detail.

  • 20mg/ml maximum nicotine strength — the legal cap for any nicotine-containing e-liquid sold in the UK
  • 10ml maximum bottle size for nicotine-containing liquid
  • 2ml maximum pod/tank capacity on any device

Every e-liquid we list meets these limits. And with the new vape duty arriving in October 2026 (£2.20 per 10ml), buying efficiently matters more than ever.

Choosing Your Strength

As a rough guide: 20mg suits heavier smokers switching over, 10mg suits lighter smokers and social vapers, and lower strengths suit those stepping down gradually. Our full nicotine strength guide walks through it properly.

Nic salts, shortfills and which one you actually want

Our 681 e-liquids run £1.99 to £23.00 across Elux, Hayati, Doozy, Bar Juice and IVG. Almost all of it divides into two formats that suit completely different hardware.

Nic salts come in 10ml bottles at 10mg or 20mg and are made for small, low-power pod kits. The nicotine is in a form that is smooth to inhale at high strength, which is exactly what you want when you are replacing cigarettes. Shortfills are large bottles of zero-nicotine juice designed for bigger refillable devices, with nic shots added separately.

Put nic salt in a high-power device and it will be unpleasantly harsh. Put shortfill in a small pod kit and it will taste thin and wick badly. The format matters more than the brand.

Reading a flavour description honestly

Flavour names are marketing, but the profile families behave predictably. Fruit profiles are the most forgiving and the slowest to fatigue the palate. Menthol and ice variants read clean but numb rather than refresh. Dessert, custard and cola profiles are the most heavily sweetened, taste the most impressive on the first tank, and destroy coils fastest.

If you have ever bought a juice you loved and found it dull a week later, that is usually not the juice. It is a coil coated in caramelised sucralose, and a fresh coil will bring it back.

What actually clears a tired palate

Acidity, astringency and bitterness. Citrus, strong tea and black coffee all work within a couple of minutes. Cooling does not work, despite being the standard advice: menthol suppresses the receptors instead of resetting them, so the flavour after your mint break lands weaker, not stronger.

Nicotine e-liquid is capped at 20mg per ml in the UK and bottles at 10ml. That is why nic salts come in small bottles and shortfills come in large ones with no nicotine. Everything we list is TPD compliant and notified. Our strength spread is mostly 20mg and 10mg, with 0mg options for people stepping off nicotine entirely.
